With April Fool’s Day over in most regions of the world, I would like to offer my two cents on a more serious topic currently under spotlight among the Nintendo community in China: The temporary halt of Switch console/game imports.

The spotlight started a few days ago with multiple stores suddenly delisting all of their items. An administrative penalty on import Switch consoles was recently discovered, and Tencent was mentioned to have “identified consoles sold as the store as ‘non official China release’”.

This line shows Tencent's involvement, but there is ambiguity whether Tencent may have an active role in stopping console imports.

The arguments for the Tencent actively pursuing a ban mentions business interest. However, this is true for hardware, as the TNS has a small library of official Chinese game release and benefits heavily from an import library. Banning software imports harms TNS console sales.

This almost immediate distrust towards China distributor is rather heavily rooted in “core” gamers in China, as these people more or less directly suffered from the console ban and various policies against gaming in the early 21th century.

Many individuals have actively expressed their distrust on imports. Here are two examples, one on the recent incident, another back a few years ago when the Chinese official releases were just recovering.

Here is a comic made by a Chinese gamer not long after ACNH was banned for trade in China, and days after the Xbox and PS4 China releases can no longer “switch to worldwide PSN/Xbox Live stores.”

Big text: China Edition
Small text: Warranty, low price, legal, unlocked/unlockable

Nintendo Hong Kong Ltd. Taiwan Branch Company was founded on April 7th, 2021, with Director Masashi Goto as the representative.

This is the first time for Taiwan to have an actual Nintendo branch in the country after Nintendo Phuten shut down in June 2013.

The legacy of iQue 3DSXL lives on!

Despite Miitopia Switch supporting Chinese text, it uses the console Mii Maker which does not support Chinese Mii names. The only possible way to make a Mii with Chinese names is to import them from an iQue 3DSXL.
