With April Fool’s Day over in most regions of the world, I would like to offer my two cents on a more serious topic currently under spotlight among the Nintendo community in China: The temporary halt of Switch console/game imports.Fri Apr 02 04:14:00 +0000 2021

The spotlight started a few days ago with multiple stores suddenly delisting all of their items. An administrative penalty on import Switch consoles was recently discovered, and Tencent was mentioned to have “identified consoles sold as the store as ‘non official China release’”.Fri Apr 02 04:14:58 +0000 2021

This line shows Tencent's involvement, but there is ambiguity whether Tencent may have an active role in stopping console imports.Fri Apr 02 04:16:02 +0000 2021

The arguments for the Tencent actively pursuing a ban mentions business interest. However, this is true for hardware, as the TNS has a small library of official Chinese game release and benefits heavily from an import library. Banning software imports harms TNS console sales.Fri Apr 02 04:17:33 +0000 2021

This almost immediate distrust towards China distributor is rather heavily rooted in “core” gamers in China, as these people more or less directly suffered from the console ban and various policies against gaming in the early 21th century.Fri Apr 02 04:18:24 +0000 2021
