Three years later, a Mainland China release is finally a reality, but at what cost? https://twitter.com/chinesenintendo/status/1112921290489311232

The POW Block is most likely not the only modification required for a Mainland China release. Porygon2, Porygon-Z and Mimikyu's Simplified Chinese names were stripped off their English letters, effective March 23.

This change was greeted with great disapproval and/or sarcasm.

It was heavily believed by the fans that the name changes were from Tencent's request because they would want less trouble getting their games approved in China.
The 3 Pokémon name changes do not affect Traditional Chinese.

Macao man was found smuggling 625 Nintendo Switch cartridges at Gongbei Port of China.

 Thu Apr 09 02:27:50 +0000 2020

Replying to @chinesenintendo

One possible reason is that there has been a long time issue of sellers resealing cartridges in knock-off cases and sell them off as new. This has plagued Switch games in China so much that lots of people have written articles on how to tell official boxes from custom ones.
 Thu Apr 09 02:29:56 +0000 2020

Another possible reason is that the Switch has attracted lots of new gamers, and many of them are unaware of the grey market "import" nature of the games they're holding. Only 3 out of ALL Nintendo Switch games (and only ONE physical) are officially released in China.

It may be a niche market on the appearance, but Nintendo did their research.
Despite few people bought genuine copies (especially true before the 3DS era), the franchise has a high popularity in the region. More people are probably fans of FE titles on the GBA than Mario.

Exactly. Chinese (console) gamers seem to heavily favor JRPG titles(Pokémon, FE, Xenoblade). It took Nintendo more than a decade to realize that making Mario as the flagship doesn't work in China.
