Did you know?
The first character in the Chinese names of the iQue "Swim" Box (共游盒) and "Swim" Controller (共游机) means "together". The second character means "to play".
So basically, the names state their use: Multiplayer gaming.

They have NOTHING to do with swimming.

 Sun Feb 03 23:56:35 +0000 2019

Replying to @chinesenintendo

The reason why these hardware were misnamed "Swim" might be a result of the verbs "to play" and "to swim" share the exact same character (游) in S. Chinese.

Without context, a translator app or someone not proficient in SIMPLIFIED Chinese may fail to decide the correct usage.

This is possibly due to a misunderstanding of the corresponding text "Key Config" in the original Japanese version.

Fun fact: Nintendo's current president, Shuntaro Furukawa, has been contantly misnamed "Shuntaro Tanikawa".
Not even Nikkei China got away with the misnomer.

Possibly due to their Kanji names “古川 俊太郎” and “谷川 俊太郎” have the exact same pronunciations in Mandarin.

Were they released, instant piracy would surely be unavoidable. Yet, were the games officially advertised in China, especially during an event with such high percentage of national participation, it could still make a big difference even if few people had bought the game. https://twitter.com/MetalMarioJSKR/status/1099896520575336448

It's pretty safe to say that before the popularization of the Switch and Super Mario Odyssey, the majority of the Chinese (non-gamers) consider Mario only as the 1985 original (or any flash-games using 2D Mario sprites).
A nationwide advertising of M&S could have changed that.
