According to this retweet (https://www.weibo.com/1857105944/GtNWfsPOT),
the Simplified Chinese names have a strong style of the Wu dialect, a dialect used in eastern China, including Suzhou, where iQue's headquarters are located.

Update: the account "apologized" in a very unserious tone, saying that they are Nintendo fans themselves who joked about themselves too far. They also backed up their claim with a picture of Nintendo Labo and a few games...
... which is STRAIGHT RIPPED OFF the internet.

It's just the screenshots of yhe hate speech and "apology" were posted on weibo.

The fan translation of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (DS), released on August 8th, 2008, was one of the very few fan translated Mario games to actually use the official translation names for Mario characters.

The only Mario character who did not follow the official S. Chinese translation, for she did not appear in a S. Chinese game until year 2012 (Mario Kart 7).
Fan: 黛西公主 (黛西 =Daisy, transliterated)
Official: 菊花公主 (菊花 = Chrysanthemum)
This does match her T. Chinese name.

Mainland China (S. Chinese) and Hong Kong/ Taiwan (T. Chinese) have a very different set of translations for Mario characters.
Just check out the character pages for Chinese and HongKonger Mario Kart 7 sites and you will be surprised how many of them are translated differently.

Yeah, and I believe kids in school started using that analogy quite a long time before 2012. Did iQue honestly not know about this use of the word chrysanthemum?

True. I'd say that the fan translators just got lucky. They picked the "Wa" part of Wario (瓦) and appended the name of Luigi (路易吉). This happened to be the exact official translation of Waluigi.

Yes. Neither of the Beijing Olympic games were officially translated into Chinese, which is a huge pity considering the crazy over the Olympics all over the country back then.

I have the same feeling as you do. Had the game been officially translated and released, the majority of the Chinese would have known better about Mario in his modern form, rather than an outdated stereotype of Mario only being an 8-bit side scroller.

I have yet to proof read their game, but it seems that they really put efforts into making the fan translation as close to an authentic one.
