The iQue Player version of Super Mario 64 was actually based on the Japanese Shindou Edition. Both have Mario faces showing up after pressing Z and Mario says "Bye-bye" after throwing Bowser.
However the iQue version manual does not mention the former feature.

One of their partnership results was iQue, Nintendo's distributor in China.

If piracy of Nintendo Switch console piracy became ubiquitous and Switch owners in China relied more on piracy, it is very possible that Nintendo will slow, or stop its localization progress, like they did with the Game Boy Advance. Nobody want to see the viscous cycle come back.
